Name: Joe Popely
Job/Employer: Newsroom Coordinator, Northwestern University
About you: A native of suburban Chicago, I’ve made some interesting stops throughout the Midwest. After graduating from Indiana University in Dec. 2013, I interned for MLB.com in Chicago covering the Cubs, White Sox and a whole bunch of visiting teams. Yes, it was awesome, but no, I do not miss being on a sports schedule. Next came a 15-month stint in rural Iowa calling high school sports for a small radio group. Now that I’ve come to my senses, I’m back in My Kind of Town pursuing full-time communications/project management work in the clean energy, sustainability, environmental and energy efficiency industries.
Why you joined the EP Committee: I have long been passionate about protecting the environment, and joining the EP committee has given me access to a diverse group of professionals with similar motivations. Also, we eat good food, drink good beer and socialize at interesting events, so those are nice pluses, too.
Likes: Sports in general (minus hockey and soccer), the White Sox, the Hoosiers, playing tennis, running, trying new restaurants and bars in Chicago, politics, spending time with friends and family and being outdoors.
Dislikes: Slow drivers in the I-90 express lanes, Midwest winters an people on public transit whose music is so loud it’s as if their headphones are in my ears.
